We managed to finally grab some time in between appointments with the sought after Dave Hurworth…
Dave! Tell us a bit about what you do here at Coalters and who you are…
I work for Coalters as a photographer and energy assessor and spend most of my days split between customers homes and the office. I live just off Acomb Road with my girlfriend Clara in a house we bought a couple of years ago and have spent what feel like most of our waking time renovating. Any spare time that I do get usually revolves around football. I play whenever I can, I have season ticket for Middlesbrough F.C. and if I get the chance I love a bit of football tourism.
Is that what you call it?! And what’s your favourite thing about working at Coalters?
My favourite part of the job is definitely photographing the properties. I love taking photos that show off customers homes and will really grab people’s attention when they are looking on Rightmove. I like spending time getting the composition and lighting right, but when someone has taken the time to dress their property it really makes my day – I just know I’m going to get a fantastic set of photos.
What does your typical day look like?
I have a morning meeting with the admin team first thing and then take a look at my diary for the day. I usually have two or three appointments in so I grab all the keys I need and my camera gear and head out. I’m then at customers homes taking photos, measuring up, drawing floorplans and producing energy performance certificates before heading back to the office and getting the property details put together.
How did you end up at Coalters?
I have been here for just over five years now, but the time has absolutely flown by. Before this I was working in retail for Jessops camera shop. I’d done this for quite a few years and I wasn’t necessarily looking for a change, but I used to work many years ago with Stu and he mentioned that a photographer’s job was available here, and it just seemed like a brilliant opportunity. I don’t regret it one bit, I really do love the mixture of half the time in the office and half the time on the road.
You must have seen some sights whilst out on the road…
I get to see all sorts of weird and wonderful things when I visit properties to take the photographs. A couple of years ago I got sent to what I got told was an empty property. When I walked through the front door I could see an old man staring at me from the back room, I nearly jumped out of my skin. I started to introduce myself but it was only when I got closer and switched the lights on I realised it was a life-sized cardboard cut out of The Pope. It really was one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever seen. I had to hide him in a cupboard whilst I got the photos done.
That is hilarious! Other than ‘The Pope’ on this occasion, is there anything else that you’re scared of?
I don’t really have any huge phobias but I’m not particularly comfortable around snakes. I have been to a surprising amount of properties where I’ve walked in and thought, I wonder what’s in that tank…. Only to back away very quickly. I’ve no idea where the phobia comes from but I do remember watching the film Beetlejuice when I was a kid and being particularly freaked out when he turned into a snake, that’s probably got something to do with it.
If you could have one super power that would improve your job – what would it be and why?
With my job I spend far too much time stuck in traffic just to get from one side of town to the other so I would definitely go for teleportation. I would never be late for an appointment again! It could also be quite useful for holidays, none of that time wasted sat around at an airport.
