Our multi tasking extraordinaire Christopher (Chris) Laycock enjoys the leaner things in life, following a challenging nutritional regime during work, only to be challenged by his girlfriend Justine back at home who has a passion for baking the most delicious cakes (if you’re reading this – please make us another Malteaser fridge cake for the office!).

York property management

Hi Chris, lets kick this off with something totally different – what is your favourite animal and why?
I don’t really have one particular animal; I like meerkats, this may just be because of the adverts. I’m always fascinated by penguins at the zoo, I could watch them for ages. On a recent trip to Chester Zoo with a couple of my friends and my girlfriend, we saw a baby Rock Hyrax. We were mesmerised by the fearless thing, climbing around all over the place. They’re really happy looking animals to.

A Rock Hyrax for those who were wondering!

They are super cute! But for now, back to basics – what is your role at Coalters?

Assistant Lettings Manager, and I split my time in Property Management to. I’ve been here since April and think the opportunities to progress that I’ve been given so far have been great.

How did you end up here and what did you do before you landed here?

I was working at Morrisons in York. I spent 10 years working there, from a student job, to a gap year job, to my full-time job. I’m really grateful for the opportunities I had there, but I felt it was time for a change and a new challenge. Coalters has a real presence in York, and you can’t miss the office with the bright logo and glass front – when I saw the opportunity I couldn’t pass it up. I’ve not regretted making the change for a second, and not working a retail Christmas for the first time in 10 years has been incredible!

What’s your typical day like juggling between your roles?

Once the morning meetings and team huddles are finished, every day is completely different! Working in Property Management is challenging, but working with motivated landlords is a real bonus. I think it’s the variety that makes the job so exciting, and I wouldn’t want that to change. Since starting I’ve been a part of the Developing Managers Scheme, which is finishing this month, and that has involved some great training sessions and projects, and ultimately have prepared me to be a manager here at Coalters.

What is the funniest thing that’s ever happened at work?

There’s a real positive vibe around the office, so there’s good laughs daily. I think the Core Value launch sessions over the last 6 months would be some highlights though. Miming to Westlife – I think Stu already shared that memorable moment! Another moment would have to be our final DMS session, which focused on creativity. We had some exercises to unleash our creative sides, and were asked to present some safety factors in an entertaining way. When the first suggestion from a colleague is to sing it to the tune of Time Warp along with some choreography, well you know you’re among some creative people. We found it funny anyway.

What’s the best thing about working at Coalters?

Getting to work with my colleagues, a bit soppy…but it’s true. There’s a lot of us with different working backgrounds and that means a lot of different experiences – it’s fascinating to work with everyone and learn from everyone. Each person is so motivated to make Coalters the best it can be, and it’s a brilliant atmosphere to be in.

What’s the best piece of advice you have for landlords in York?

Invest in your properties, look after your tenants, and let Coalters manage your property of course!

If you had to audition for X-Factor, what song would you sing and why?

I’ve got plenty of original songs from gigging with my old band and on my own, but they like covers on X-Factor don’t they. I don’t really watch much X-Factor to know what they go for. One of my favourite songs of all time is ‘Only Living Boy in New York’ by Simon and Garfunkel, so maybe that. Or some complete cheese, my guilty pleasure at the moment is GRL’s ‘Ugly Heart’… It used to come on during night shifts at Morrisons, and I just can’t deny that I love it!
