South Bank Location Guide 2018-01-23T07:48:34+00:00

Trendy South Bank, situated to the south of York just off Bishopthorpe Road, is terraced- home-heaven mixed with some very premium properties overlooking the Knavesmire. Very popular with all types of buyers, the demand for property in this area is extremely high. The area is dominated by ‘The Residence’ – the former Terry’s Chocolate Factory which is now home to luxury apartments – and ‘The Clock Tower’ which is part of the same skyline.

The Chocolate Works factory opened in 1926 and is famous for manufacturing Terry’s Chocolate Orange and other treats!  In 2004, production was shifted to other parts of Europe and the factory closed in 2005.  The site now houses a luxury apartment building.

York Racecourse is nearby and forms part of the larger Knavesmire.  South Bank is also home to Rowntree Park near the river where you can also visit the innovative Reading Cafe that works like a library with lovely food.  The Millennium Bridge which links South Bank to Fishergate and Fulford was completed in 2001 at a cost of £4.2million.

South Bank is a great location for access to York.  It is approximately 20 minutes walk to the train station and City Centre and 15 minutes walk to the York greenbelt along the River Ouse

Trains: the East Coast mainline heads north to Newcastle and beyond or there are regular trains south to London.  The TransPennine Express frequently journeys to Leeds in 25 mins and Scarborough in around 50 mins; There’s an hourly service to Hull and half-hourly to Harrogate.  Leeds, Scarborough, the Dales or the Moors are an hour’s drive, the A1M and M1 around 30-40 mins.
